What is Glympse?
Glympse is a Seattle-based mobile startup focused on delivering the world’s most simple and safe location sharing solution approachable by anyone. Glympse was conceived as an easier way to answer a question that each of us asks every day: “Where are you?”
We provide a smart phone app for consumers and a platform for businesses and brands to integrate quick location sharing features into their products for their customers.
What’s your traction been like thus far?
Earlier this year (2013) we announced that we surpassed 10 million unique users of our service. On the platform licensing front, we have been very fortunate to secure licensing or partnership deals with several major brands including Mercedes, Verizon Wireless, Samsung, Ford, BMW/Mini, Garmin, and GoGo Air.
Are you hiring? If so, for what?
YES! Glympse is looking for talented mobile developers (primarily Android and iOS) and also cloud/back-end developers.
What do you know now that you wish you would have known when you started Glympse?
The difficulty of recruiting top talent for the team. That has been especially difficult for us this year.
What’s a hypothesis that you’ve had that has failed? And how did you respond?
We have a fairly diverse internationally distributed user base. We localized our app descriptions into 10 languages earlier this year in advance of a fully localized app release with the expectation that we would see increased interest (measured by app downloads) in those 10 markets. What we found was that simply localizing the app store descriptions did not move the needle for us significantly. It wasn’t until introduced a fully localized app that we saw the growth we originally expected.
What’s your favorite startup in Seattle? (Besides your own!)
Tough choice. So many great companies in Seattle. My current favorite is Apptentive. I like their service a lot and I’m impressed by the speed at which they are iterating their product. They’ve also got a great team that contributes a ton to our local start-up community. (Props to Red and Ezra). I’ve also got a ton of respect for what Moz has built — great team and culture and nice business to boot.
What’s your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur?
The freedom to choose one’s own destiny.
What’s your favorite local sports team?
If your company were an animal, what would it be and why?
Probably a dog. It’s not uncommon for team members to bring their dogs into the office. They’ve become our unofficial mascots.
If you were to take Glympse on a date, where would it want to go?
We actually do go on dates – as a team. The first Friday of every month we get out of the office for a team event. My personal favorite was the one I attended during my job interview in Nov 2011. We went to iFly the indoor skydiving center, and all got a lesson in sky diving. Best. Interview. Ever.
