What is EveryMove?
EveryMove is the equivalent of a mileage plan for health. We help consumers turn their healthy lifestyle data into rewards from their health plan, employer and brands.

What’s your traction been like thus far?
We launched in October 2012. We have signed about 100 deals to enable this ecosystem including mobile apps/devices, health plans, employers and retailers. We have some attractive deals with Precor and with some of the Blue Cross plans. We have launched our service on web and mobile (iphone and iOS). We have approximately 50,000 registered users and growing at 100% m/o/m.

What do you know now that you wish you would have known when you started EveryMove?
I think we spent a lot of time with late adopter/laggard customers which is not uncommon in healthcare but I didn’t grasp the challenges of doing that and it has an impact on progress. The key is to align early with customers that are innovators/early adopters to reduce friction in validating the problem we are trying to solve.

What’s a hypothesis that you’ve had that has failed? And how did you respond?
I had a core hypothesis around the pace at which health insurance plans would feel the need to respond to a radical industry shift toward the consumer and that there was a forcing function (regulation) that would handle that. The response has not been as much of a “pull” as we expected so we are bridging this timing difference by tapping other channels of distribution.

What does the future hold for your business?
We are at the center of two major trends (direct to consumer healthcare and distributed data capture sources) that are converging to put more power into the hands of the consumer. That is exciting. We need to play our cards right but we see EveryMove playing a critical role in unlocking the true value of this data for the benefit of consumers.

What about EveryMove most excites you?
Honestly, it’s the team. I don’t know exactly what we are going to be when we grow up but I do know that I couldn’t imagine the journey without this group of people who are so talented, dedicated, and fun to be around. It’s a gift.

How would you describe your company culture?
Culture is an intentional work in progress. If I had two words to describe our culture I’d say “transparency” and “collaboration”.

What’s your favorite thing about being a startup in Seattle?
It’s a gracious community. Low egos and a high interest to help at all levels.

What’s your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur?
1. Working with insanely smart and motivated people who want to make a mark.
2. A willingness and desire to disrupt existing prevailing norms to change the conversation
3. Making a mark – doing something purposeful

What’s your favorite startup in Seattle? (Besides your own!)
Probably Haiku Deck. I use the product and I think Adam has done a great job steering the “story.”

Seahawks, Sounders, Mariners or Huskies?
Sounders because it’s the only team I’ve watched play in the last 4 years. Welcome to entrepreneurship.

If your company was an animal, what would it be and why?
Probably a mongoose. They are agile, have thick coats and can fight and kill venomous snakes. That’s how I think we have to be – unassuming but powerful.

If you were to take your company on a date, where would it want to go?
In Seattle, probably to Evolution Fresh. It wouldn’t be a really romantic date but it would be gluten free and jam packed with fresh juice. I think we would leave there with a lot of energy and that might be a good thing depending on how the date is going.
