What is Apptentive?
Robi: Apptentive is the easiest way for every company with an app to talk to their customers. Quite simply, we make it possible for a company with an app to listen, for support and feedback questions, for product suggestions, etc. We make it easier to engage for better ratings and reviews, to reach out and figure out how their customers feel. We also enable realtime research using in-app surveys that they can monitor on the fly.

What kind of traction has Apptentive seen since launch?
Robi: We have over 1,000 registered developers on our platform. It’s really accelerated quite a bit in the last four months since we closed our round. We’re happy to say that we’ve got big customers on board like Urban Spoon, Cheezburger, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Decide.com, Yahoo, and tons of others. We’re working with a lot of developers who are giving us tons of great feedback and saying we’re delivering results.

Mike: In addition to the thousand plus customers that have signed up, we’re seeing significant volumes of traffic going through. We’ve processed over 50,000 pieces of feedback, we’ve collected over 250 million metrics around how people are interacting with the SDK. This allows us to build better more relevant interactions for our customers.

What do you know now that you wish you would have known when you started?
Robi: I think that the thing we’ve learned and that we continue to learn over and over again is that shipping stuff and putting it in customers hands and actually seeing what it’s like when they’re playing with it and using it for their needs is the best thing possible. We definitely got an MVP out the door relatively quickly but we probably should have been working on it much sooner. We had the original idea at the end of 2008, but we didn’t really sit down and build it until 2011 and that’s obviously quite a big gap in time.

Mike: The importance of creating and maintaining momentum is something that we just reflect on over and over again. The importance of that permeates all aspects of the business whether it’s product, customer development, business development, or fundraising. Just create that momentum and then hold onto it.

What’s your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur?
Robi: I think my favorite thing is really getting to work with people you respect on something that you love. I’ve worked at big companies before with teams that I didn’t get to pick on projects that sometimes I was excited about and sometimes I just had to do. Here we get to choose and I think I’m super passionate about what we’re doing and more importantly I’m super passionate about the people I’m doing it with.

Mike: I would just echo to say that the fact that I get to do something that I love and that we have customers that care about it and that we solve a need and see the appreciation coming through is tremendously powerful.

What about Apptentive is most exciting to you?
Mike: To me the most exciting thing about Apptentive is that we have a remarkably talented group of people working on deep challenging problems and coming up with products that resonate with customers. The combination of those three things gets me up in the morning and makes me sad Friday night when I have to think about the weekend and slowing down for a little bit before I can be right back at it Monday morning.
